Built in 1944, the Barker’s Creek Grist Mill occupies a mill seat that was first established in the Blue Ridge foothills during the 1820s. Serving the community of Rabun Gap, the present day mill still grinds corn on the first Saturday of the month to demonstrate the workings of this historic establishment. Part of the Hambidge Center, the mill has been renovated three times with the last refurbishment project during the 1980s. Built by the Meadow’s Milling Company from North Carolina, the grist mill utilizes a 12-foot overshot wheel. A volunteer miller, Woody Malot is a decedent from a long line of millers and is able to answer most any question about the age-old process of grinding corn during the Saturday open house.
   Founder of the Hambidge Center, Mary Hambidge moved back to the northeast Georgia to set up an art center in 1934. Established to provide a program for talented individuals to explore, develop, and hone their creative minds, the center continues on its mission today. Called the Saturday Series, the public is invited to the campus on Saturdays for a series of rotating activities. The Hambidge Center is a member of the Alliance of Artist's Communities and was recognized with the 1996 Cultural Olympiad Regional Designation Award in the Arts.
