Edisto River

Edisto River

For road weary drivers, the Colleton State Park can make a pleasurable stopover when traveling through South Carolina along Interstate 95. This state park is a few minutes from the highway, offering a wooded picnic area, campsites and access to the Edisto River. This wayside park was developed by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s and their handiwork is still in use throughout the park.
For a small adventure, the park's Cypress Swamp Nature Trail is ideal for the young family. The park is also headquarters for the Edisto River Canoe and Kayak Trail. The June Edisto Riverfest, turning into a popular annual event, has been attracting a crowd for the last two decades. The Edisto River Basin is viewed as the longest blackwater river in the world. The stream, stained with tree's tannic acid, meanders through 12 South Carolina counties. Guided River trips are offered throughout the year.
