The Cornhusker State
Difficult to fathom, estimates suggest nearly a half million pioneers moved across Nebraska's Great Plains during the second half of the 19th century. Lured by promises of rich farmland in the West, a steady stream of settlers slogged along the Oregon Trail. Traveling this overland route for months, ranchers, farmers and miners were eager to gage their progress. The landmarks of Scotts Bluff National Monument and Chimney Rock NHS, two of the state's spectacular monoliths, offered the promise that their journey was nearing the half way point.
Today, Nebraska welcomes its visitors to experience this pioneer spirit at its many of state parks, historic sites and recreation areas. Remnants of the bloody Plains Wars are preserved at Fort Robinson, while the some of the state's most spectacular scenery is found on the Niobrara National Scenic River and Scotts Bluff National Monument.
