The Ocean State

Thanking God for securing land in the New World, Roger Williams gave his new home the name Providence. Founded in 1636, the capital city, Providence, and the remainder of Rhode Island offers its visitors an opportunity to explore centuries of its rich history. Tours include Colonial clapboards, Federal period homes, museums and some of the country’s first churches, making up one of the largest collections of homes on the National Register of Historic Places. Nicknamed the Ocean State, Rhode Island is proud of its miles of beautiful beaches, famous beach resorts, and collection of picturesque lighthouse settings. The state’s small size makes it easy to get around to see sporting events, nature preserves, arts and culture, shopping, sightseeing and just plain relaxing.
