Similar to the state of Maine, but not nearly as extensive, the coast of Rhode Island is marked by a series of straits, bays, estuaries, islands and peninsulas. One of the state's larger islands, Conanicut Island, is home to Beavertail State Park. Just over 150 acres, the park marks the extreme southern tip of the island.
The park is noted for its rugged coastline, scenic beauty and the historic Beavertail Lighthouse. Built in 1856, the light provides navigation for boats and ships entering Narragansett Bay in the East Passage. One of top attractions for New Englander visitors, the lighthouse grounds are accessible in the park. There is a museum and gift shop in the keepers' houses and the tower is opened to the public during scheduled open houses.
Support buildings include the light-keeper's house, assistant keeper's house, oil house, and out buildings. The original third-order Fresnel lenswas removed from the light tower and replaced with modern optics.
Park-goers may enjoy coastline views from the park overlooks or along the rocky coastline. Saltwater fishing, birding, tide pool exploration, picnicking and photography draw more visitors to the park.
