Here in Utah's Canyonlands National Park visitors will find two very accessible Districts, Island in the Sky and the Needles. The Island in the Sky, a point of land separated by the Green and Colorado rivers, is not far from the city of Moab. These two converging rivers have managed to create the incredible gorges which spawned the name Canyonlands.
One of the most popular sites on the Island, and one of the easiest hikes, is the Mesa Arch. Here you'll find a great example of nature's handiwork, a gaping hole in a sandstone fin. After a close-up inspection of this arch, a view through the opening reveals incredible views of Utah's canyonlands far below. Perched high above White Rim Canyon Road, this enchanting sunrise view is considered unequaled by many. Found about an hour's drive from Moab, you have to work on your timing to see this enchanting view at sunrise.
Mesa Arch is an easy half mile hike, and because of this short distance and popularity, it would be a rare occurrence to witness the sunrise here by yourself. Long gone are the reverent crowds when at one time all that could be heard were whispers, oohs and aahs. While there are more
arches in Canyonlands to see, and even though the site can be very crowded, make sure to included this one on your must see list. On your way back to the parking lot you may stop and admire Aztec Butte across the highway. The early morning sun may cast a warm glow on the face of the butte.
