Michigan Fall Auto Tours

Michigan Fall Auto Tours

During the autumn season New England seems to grab the majority of the press when it comes to fall color and scenic drives. Not to be outdone, Michigan puts on a respectable presentation with its annual blaze of glory. Over two dozen fall color routes are mapped from the Upper Peninsula to the southern tip of the state. With 19 million acres of forestland, sightseers can't miss seeing some of these brilliant forests when fall arrives. Michigan's Upper Peninsula, squeezed between Lake Superior and Lake Michigan, begins its annual show in mid September. Autumn hues of gold, orange and crimson are set to a backdrop of deep green conifers. By mid October the excitement of color has swept southward through the Lower Peninsula.
This rural road scene was found just outside Grand Rapids where a brief rain shower seemed to enhance these fall colors. With the area's gentle hills and plenty of waterways, some outdoor lovers choose either bicycling or canoeing to enjoy these fabulous color displays. Whether its over coastal highways, or backcountry roads, autumn in Michigan is filled with spectacular colors, u-pick orchards, cider mills and farm markets; the makings of a great autumn vacation.
