The Stone Lagoon Schoolhouse, sometimes Redwoods along US Highway 101, North California called the Little Red Schoolhouse, is located along the Pacific Coast Highway in Northern California. Named for the nearby Stone Lagoon, the school district was placed on the map in 1893. This one room school opened in 1899, in a land that is well known for its redwood forests. When the area schools were consolidated into the Big Lagoon School in 1958, this colorful schoolhouse closed its doors forever. The original location of Stone Lagoon School was on the west side of Coastal Highway 101, but the school was moved across the highway to its present location. Roosevelt Elk - Trinidad, California Located just south of Orick, the school building is owned by the Redwood Lake Resort, which is part of the Elk Country RV Resort and Campground.
The Roosevelt elk herd here are part of a major success story. Nearly hunted to extinction by North Coast settlers, only a few hundred animals were left when conservation efforts began. The elk herd now number in the thousands and continue to be reintroduced to many areas of their original range, which spanned the coastal area from southern British Columbia to Sonoma County, California.
