Lobster, fresh vegetables, home-make pies and a seacoast that offers one scenic stop after another ... coastal Maine is just a fantastic vacation destination. Its 3500 miles of shoreline, quaint harbor towns and picturesque seasides have captured the hearts of New England tourists for centuries. Its long chain of peninsulas and rocky islands harbor one of the largest concentrations of historic lighthouses in America, and some suggest that Pemaquid Point Lighthouse is one of the most picturesque coastal scenes in the state.
Damariscotta, one of the Twin Villages that line the banks of the Damariscotta River, is the gateway to the Pemaquid Region. With all the focus on the coastline and seafood industry, it’s easy to forget about Maine's contribution as an agricultural leader in New England. Known for its potato crop, Maine also produces a record amount of eggs, wild blueberries, oysters and sweet muscles. Maine's numerous farmers markets and farm stands are found throughout the state.
This busy produce stand in Damariscotta highlights Maine's colorful fall bounty. Decorated with a tempting mix of pumpkins and potted mums, inside customers will find a splendid array of local produce. One of Maine's 6700 farms, Clark Farms has been featuring fruits, vegetables and produce since 2005. Of its estimated 1.25 million acres of farmland, Maine's agricultural industry has a 1.2 billion dollar impact on the state's economy.
