Here in the White Mountains of New Hampshire there's no shortage on scenic vistas and intriguing day hikes. Within a short distance of North Conway and Echo Lake, the Cathedral Ledge State Park offers marvelous views of the Saco River Valley and the distant White Mountains.
Considered a somewhat challenging route, the 3 mile roundtrip trail from Echo Lake takes the average hiker about an hour and 30 minutes to complete. A scenic trail around Echo Lake provides park visitors great views of both Cathedral and White Horse ledges. Both are popular for rock climbing as well as the winter sport of ice climbing.
For those short on time or not able to tackle a climb to Cathedral Ledge, a mile-long auto road climbs to the top of 700-foot high overlook. Especially beautiful during the autumn season, expect the hills and mountains to be covered in red, yellow and orange foliage. The first week in October is an extremely popular sightseeing time, so it's best to make advanced reservations for your stay here in the White Mountains.
No admission fee required to enter Cathedral Ledge State Park, but signs ask to consider a donation to support the park at any of the kiosks along Cathedral Ledge Road.
