Not too far from the Tennessee city of Wartburg, the free-flowing Wild and Scenic Obed River offers Cumberland Plateau visitors a variety of outdoor recreational opportunities. The wild in this area may mean its remote location to some, to others it could be an invitation to observe wildlife, and for a few it may suggest adventure. During high water, experienced paddlers may tackle whitewater rapids with ratings that churn up to Class V. The river's 500-foot deep gorges put on a show for sightseers, and hikers may tackle the Point Trail along the canyon rim. For those who like to fish, a variety of bass, bluegill, catfish may offer plenty of action. Rock climbing is another one of the park's pasttimes, but this activity is for experienced climbers with adequate gear and skill.
Keep in mind there are no lifeguards here in the area, so swimmers and paddlers must be aware that the rivers have fast moving currents and can be extremely dangerous, especially during high water. For river paddlers, it's recommended every party should have at least three boats.
While whitewater paddling is seasonal, rock climbing and bouldering are challenging activities which are not limited to the fluctuations in the water level. Both climbing and whitewater boating are inherently dangerous activities that should not be engaged in by the inexperienced.
This birds-eye-view from the Lilly Bluff Overlook may offer an idea of what the Obed Wild and Scenic River is all about. This is a great starting point for a hike along the canyon rim.
