In 2008, South Carolina's State Park Service announced a year long celebration of its parks. The 75th anniversary salute centers around the first parks set up by the Civilian Conservation Corps during the 1930s. Over the period of eight years of service, the CCC built 16 parks, planted over 50 million trees and raised over 900 bridges. Many of the CCC's structures are still in use today, giving testimony of the fine craftsmanship of that era.
Table Rock State Park, is one of the most popular parks in South Carolina. With its massive granite dome for a backdrop, the park was among the group of original CCC parks first established in 1933. Table Rock Mountain, reaching 3157 feet, marks the southern end of the Appalachian Mountain Chain. This area, sometimes called the Blue Wall, makes up a remarkable stretch of parkland and mountain preserves along Route 11. Table Rock State Park occupies 3000 acres of this Blue Ridge Mountain land and provides some of the most challenging hiking trails in the state's 47 park inventory. Table Rock park is also noted for its two lakes, picturesque waterfalls, its refurbished lodge, campgrounds and rustic cabins.
