Set among slickrock domes, colorful mesas and weathered bowls, the Sand Flats Recreation Area near Moab caters to mountain bikers, offroad vehicles and campers. Featuring 8000 acres laced with bike and jeep trails, the recreation area offers incredible scenery with a backdrop of La Sal Mountain peaks where some top 12,000 feet. Lead a by collaborative effort, the group's goal was to protect the area's natural features, reduce adverse environmental impacts while still providing enjoyable outdoor back-country recreational opportunities.
Located near the heart of the Colorado Plateau, the area features a typical desert-like environment with the occasional pinyon pine and juniper. Over 200,000 visitors enjoy this recreation site every year, with many staying at multiple campground sites spread through the park. Group sites accommodate up to 16 people and include shade structures, picnic tables, fire rings and vault toilet facilities nearby. Sites are non-electric and do not provide water.
Even though the rec area is near the city of Moab, the park is noted for incredible stargazing. The area's public lands, which surround Moab, have some of the darkest skies remaining in the United States. As few as one in ten Americans lives in an area where they can see the estimated 2500 stars that should be visible under normal conditions. In many urban centers around the country the night sky is mostly obscured by the glow of city lights.
