The Mount Rushmore State
South Dakota is best known for its Black Hills and one of the world's most famous stone carvings, the Shrine of Democracy at Mount Rushmore. Still known as the Dakota Territory in the 1800s, the state is rich in wild west history and remnants of the Great Sioux Nation. Distant history is best represented with the Black Hills discovery of a T-Rex named Sue, and other fossilized dinosaurs.
With 58 state parks and five national park sites, recreation and adventure can be found statewide. Five scenic byways and three Heritage Trails provide plenty of sightseeing opportunities for those that enjoy scenic beauty from the comfort of their own vehicle.
The state's slogan, Great Faces, Great Places, simplifies the state's wide variety of attractions and scenic wonders.
