Heart of Dixie
Alabama is graced with a moderate climate. Its lands vary from the white sands of the Gulf Coast, where its oldest city Mobile is found, to the rugged Appalachian Mountains of the north. Eight national park sites and over 20 state parks (seven official state resort parks) are sprinkled from the Tennessee border to the Gulf of Mexico. These parks offer the best sites for biking, camping, hiking, rock climbing and wildlife watching in the South. With more than one million acres of lakes, 1600 miles of rivers and 53 miles of coastline, Alabama is an ideal place for boating, canoeing, fishing or rafting. Alabama also boasts as being one of the premier states in the nation for hunting.
Along with seven state scenic byways, three highways have also been designated as National Scenic Byways, offering miles of historic trails, recreational opportunities and beautiful scenic vistas.
