Included in the lengthy list of Alabama's
natural wonders is a natural bridge found in the northwestern section of the state. This sandstone arch stands 60 feet high and stretches 148 feet in length. Actually the bridge is divided up into three sections creating skylights inside the cavernous opening. The bridge is one of the longest natural bridges and arch spans east of the Mississippi.
This scenic area, covered in rolling hills, is found along U.S. Route 278 just west of the town of Natural Bridge. The Natural Bridge Park, filled with a variety of ferns and very old hemlocks, opened in 1954. The site's hiking and picnicking areas are tucked into this natural forest, and also features a nice mix of wildflowers along the woodland path. The bridge is easily reached by way of a short footpath. Underneath the bridge, a circular walkway gives visitors an up-close, stirring view of the span overhead.
