Thanks to the splendid efforts of The Friends of Concord Point Lighthouse, Havre de Grace's most celebrated landmark looks as good as its first days of service. Located in a park-like setting and displaying its original white and black day-markings, the Concord Point Lighthouse still retains its proud position overlooking Concord Point where the Susquehanna River empties into the Chesapeake Bay.
In keeping with the Coast Guard's standard practice of reducing inventory of antiquated lighthouses, the Concord Point Lighthouse was deeded over to the city of Havre de Grace. During the city's short period of ownership, the administration realized only bad news. The how and who may never be known, but the story soon surfaced of the disappearance of the light's Fresnel lens. With no clear direction for the town's key landmark, the Friends of Concord Point Lighthouse gathered together to take charge of the lighthouse refurbishment plan. To quickly improve appearance, the tower’s granite walls were cleaned, repointed and painted. Extensive renovations included the replacement of the electrical system and eventually found a replacement Fresnel lens from the Coast Guard. Additional grants helped the Friends in tackling phase II, returning the keeper's quarter to its 1884 appearance. Years of work received quite a setback when Hurricane Isabel flooded the area. The John O'Neill House (named in honor of the first light-keeper) eventually opened to the public in 2005. The lighthouse is also open for tours on the weekends from 1pm to 5pm from May thru October.
