Beginning with a 99 year property lease, which included the Von Vultee Mansion, Joe and Marie Schedel began a lifelong endeavor building a group of dramatic gardens to surround their home. Well versed in landscape design, horticulture and ornithology, over the years the Schedels developed lakes, upland properties and the river valley with acres of tree varieties, rare birds and beautiful gardens.
After Joe Schedel passed away in the 1981 the estate's gardens began to show signs of neglect. After Marie died in 1989, the Schedel Foundation went to work returning the mansion and gardens to their original state. The refurbished gardens feature over 20,000 annuals, a grove of dawn redwoods, Yoshino cherry trees (grown from cuttings of Washington, DC's Tidal Basin cherry trees) and 50 lilac varieties. Guests are introduced to the Schedel’s formal rose garden, a fruit tree orchard, vegetable garden, and everyone’s favorite, a magnificent Japanese garden. The 1800s manor house features a lifelong collection of the Schedel’s artwork, with representation works from over 100 countries.
Located on Ohio's Portage River, the Schedel Arboretum and Gardens are open to the public. Open most every day, the not-for-profit garden tours run at various hours.
