Whether you decide to climb to the top on foot, or take the auto road, the view from up on top of Mount Battie is simply incredible. Here at Camden Hill State Park, offering one of the most popular mountain top views on the Maine Coast, visitors find a wonderful panoramic view of Penobscot Bay, with the town of Camden and Camden Harbor lying at their feet. Camden's travel brochure follows that thought, posting a catch phrase, Where the mountains meet the sea. On a blue-bird day, Acadia National Park's Cadillac Mountain can been seen from this 780 foot perch, nearly 50 miles off to the northeast. The other mountain, included in Camden Hills State Park, is
Mount Megunticook (elevation 1385 feet), one of the highest points along the coast.
The park has been a very popular and cool retreat for over a century, with past entrepreneurs taking visitors to the top by buckboard and carriage. Today, the cool breeze is still enjoyed by campers, picnickers, and sightseers.
Hikers that tackle the Mount Battie climb, one of many trails in the park, will have time to notice outcroppings of the mountain's geological makeup on the way up. Here underfoot, the mountain's ancient metomorphic rock is made up of quartzite. This tough metamorphic rock, composed mostly of the mineral quartz, has endured Maine's harsh erosional elements for thousands of years since the last ice age. Although it's challeging climb, it's just a half mile to the top.
