Scenic USA - Maine Cadillac Mountain |

Cadillac Mountain, the tallest peak on the Maine coast, towers over the rocky coastline by 1500 feet. One of the most popular destinations in Acadia National Park, this rounded seacoast mountain is made up of an immense block of granite. And the majority of the mountain, well worn over a very long period of time, is a lovely pink stone. Known for its fantastic viewpoints, some national park visitors hike to the top, while many others take the paved road. At certain times of the year, all that reach the top by the time of an early morning sunrise can claim to be the first to see the sun in the United States.
Near the end of the 19th century, many well-to-do families, including the Morgans, Fords, Vanderbilts and Carnegies, enjoyed Mount Desert Island as their playground. By the early 1900s, the Bar Harbor area was covered in 100 room cottages of the rich and famous. Fearing overcrowding and a steady decline from intense lumbering, George Dorr spent most of his adult life sponsoring the idea of a park here on the island. By 1919, President Wilson established Lafayette National Park on Mount Desert Island, America's first national park east of the Mississippi. The park was renamed Acadia in 1929, appeasing some generous land donors. Protecting 47,000 acres of Maine's coastal beauty, Acadia celebrated its 100 year anniversary in 2016 as well as the National Park Service.
