Part of a land grant from Robert H. and Laura Treman, Buttermilk Falls State Park was added to the New York State inventory of parklands in 1924. Located just a few miles from Ithaca, this view of Buttermilk Falls is one of the first sights you'll see when entering the lower section of the park. Enhanced by the intense color of autumn foliage, this view captures the Second Falls as it drops 90 feet into an enticing wading pool. The lower section of the park offers a campground, ball fields and the Larch Meadow Wetland Trail. The Gorge and Rim trails follow each side of the Buttermilk Creek Gorge. Here, the creek drops more than 500 feet, creating a series of cascades and falls. In this glen, where it widens into an amphitheater, hikers are rewarded with more waterfalls and a semi-circle of rock formations, including Pulpit Rock.
The upper park, which includes Lake Treman, is off the beaten track and sees fewer visitors. Play areas, lakeside trails and picnic areas complement the lower section. Here at topside, and depending how you see it, you’ll find either the end or beginning of the Rim and Gorge trails.
