Scenic USA - New Jersey Delaware River Railroad Excursions |
Photos by Ben Prepelka Ben Prepelka Photography |
Steam locomotive #142 furnishes all the horsepower needed for scenic tours along the New Jersey side of the Delaware River. The excursion train departs from historic Phillipsburg and is one of the few active steam powered trains in New Jersey. Over a half dozen themed events run throughout the year, from the Corn Maze Train and The Great Pumpkin Train, to the Day Out With Thomas and The Polar Express.
The Susquehanna #142 is the youngest steam locomotive in America, and pretty much looks like a vintage engine from the past. Actually the #142 was built in 1988 by the Tangshan Locomotive Works in the Peoples Republic of China. The New York Susquehanna & Western Technical and Historical Society owns and operates the Delaware River Railroad Excursion system. The scenic train makes several mainline runs during the year, but primarily operates on weekends over the Belvidere & Delaware River Railroad line in partnership with the Black River & Western Railroad.
