Unlike its western neighbor, Pennsylvania, New Jersey never had many covered bridges. Making way for a modern bridge, the state's only historic covered bridge was dismantled and removed. Almost too late in taking action, the townspeople caused a great furor when the 100 year old Green Sergeant's Bridge disappeared. Surviving this scare in 1960, the Sergeantsville community's wishes prevailed, and their beloved bridge was returned to its original location.
Sergeants Bridge Street View Today, the 84 foot bridge supports one way traffic over the Wickecheoke Creek. Although a mix of old and new bridges detracts from this rural setting, one of New Jersey's historic landmarks endures.
Sergeantsville was home for Revolutionary War soldier, Charles Sergeant. Seeing little change over the last 200 years, only recently has the area begun to attract potential buyers from large cities. Seems the main attraction here is quiet living and a small town atmosphere. Once outside the I-95 corridor and the large cities of Trenton and Princeton, western New Jersey remains mostly rural. To the west of Sergeantsville, the land is made up of rolling hills and picturesque farmland. One more advantage for those seeking country living, peace and quiet.
