The Peace Garden State
Achieving statehood on July 10, 1890, North Dakota’s territorial history includes the movements of Native Americans, trappers, explorers and homesteaders. Many of the state’s parks focus on its historic forts, Lake Sakakawea, the historic Lewis and Clark Trail and the rugged badlands.
President Theodore Roosevelt will be forever tied to North Dakota with his presence at Elkhorn Ranch and his legacy of national park advocacy. He is honored at the Theodore Roosevelt National Park. The International Peace Gardens highlight the state's strong ties with neighboring Canada, and the Knife River Indian Village acquaints visitors with some of the area’s earliest settlers.
