Gillette Castle - East Haddam, Connecticut
Photos by Terri Prepelka

William Gillette's dream home, focal point of a Connecticut state West elevation - Gillette Castle, East Haddam, Connecticut park, is a rather large fieldstone castle. The 24 room mansion, designed by Gillette, turned out to be his semi retirement home, as he continued to work until age 82, well past typical retirement age. Located in the Seven Sisters Mountains, the castle overlooks the Connecticut River, near the city of East Haddam. The western elevation, finished with intricate stone work, features a terrace with incredible river views.
The William H. Gillette story begins at a young age when he became interested in stage, continuing on to become an actor, director, playwright and novelist. He was best known for his portrayal of Sherlock Holmes, Garden Arch - Gillette Castle, East Haddam, Connecticut and his home of course, the Gillette Castle.
The three-story mansion, completed in 1919, is one of Connecticut's most popular attractions. Gillette's last wish directed that the estate wasn't to be conveyed to some blithering sap-head. His wishes granted, the 184 acre estate was purchased in 1943 by the State of Connecticut and converted into a state park. Still maintained by the state, the castle remains in excellent condition, and tours of the marvelous interior are available to the public. Open from Memorial Day Weekend to Columbus Day, there is a small fee for this tour.
