For autumn sightseers, there's no place more special than New England. Known throughout the world for incredible foliage, fall festivals, fresh squeezed cider and colorful roadside farm markets, autumn is the perfect time to explore the New England states.
Here in western Maine's Lake and Mountain Region, the Rangeley Lakes Scenic Byway exemplifies what the area is all about. The 35 mile byway, tracing a wishbone shaped route, connects the towns of Madrid, Rangeley, Oquossoc and Houghton. Following Route 4 and 17, the byway passes six significant bodies of water, waterfalls, hiking and biking trails, charming towns and magnificent mountain views.
This view at the Height of Land captures autumn’s colorful hardwoods at their peak. On a clear day, overlook views look down on Upper Richardson and Mooselookmeguntic lakes and the distant White Mountains in New Hampshire. Phase 2 at the Height of Land added a conservation walk. The network of trails feature inspirational plaques with quotes from John Muir, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Henry David Thoreau and Teddy Roosevelt.
