Surrounded by a seemingly endless Bald Eagle State Forest, Pennsylvania's Poe Valley State Park is nestled in a valley among the central Appalachian Mountains. One of a half dozen closely grouped state parks, Poe Valley occupies 620 acres of heavily forested hills that were saved by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s. Heavily logged during the start of the 20th century, the Depression Era corps went to work clearing brush, cleaning up streams and replanting trees. Today's beautiful Pennsylvania forest owes much to the reforestation movement and the young men of Roosevelt's army.
Poe Valley Lake is centered in the park and provides plenty of recreational activities. The swimming beach is open from late May until Labor Day. During hunting season the park opens 450 acres for deer, turkey, grouse and bear. Campgrounds and camping cottages are open from mid April through October. Seen here in the sunny days of autumn, cool nights and a forest ablaze with fall foliage have all the makings of memorable last hurrah of the season. Day hikes, a backpacking trip, fishing on Poe Lake or just picnicking in the park are great ways to enjoy the fall season.
