The Sphere, sculpted by Fritz Koenig, once stood between New York City’s Twin Towers amidst a seven building office complex in lower Manhattan. One of the few remaining artifacts surviving the World Trade Center terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, The Sphere was moved a few blocks away to Battery Park and rededicated as a memorial to all innocent victims who lost their lives on September 11th, 2001.
The Sphere, originally conceived to symbolize world peace through world trade, attracted enough attention after the attack to be considered as a memorial. At first, Koenig opposed the plan, but soon had a change of heart and directed efforts to reset the sculpture as a memorial. Koenig offered his thoughts, noting that it now has a different beauty, one I could never imagine. Battered, dented and scarred, the sculpture was positioned on a new base near Hope Garden, representing the resiliency of the American people. With the addition of an eternal flame, the memorial honors the spirit and sacrifice for all those lost.
