Geologically active, California's Mammoth Lakes region rests on the edge of the Long Valley Caldera. Here in the eastern Sierras, Mammoth Mountain looks over an already high altitude land, and features some of the best skiing in the United States. The area is packed with wilderness lands, an assortment of famous lakes and national parklands, making up a huge playground for outdoor activities.
The Town of Mammoth Lakes, riding the real estate market like a theme park roller coaster, is just recovering from property values taking a big plunge after a 1980s earthquake. The development of Mammoth Mountain Resort brought back many tourists and new home-buyers. One item that remains a constant in the area is its breathtaking scenery. Lake Mary Road continues beyond town into the Mammoth Lakes Basin. Here, a string of a half dozen lakes attract summer visitors with their hearts set on hiking, fishing, boating and camping.
The basin was carved out during the last ice age, and is still surrounded by mountains, hilly terrain and more mountain ranges. Pictured here is a view of the lower lake of Twin Lakes, the first of a group of Mammoth Lakes found about three miles from town. Beginning at 8500 feet in elevation, the Lake Mary Road continues to climb to more lake views. Clearwater Creek, aptly named, feeds Twin Lakes. A small cascade between the upper and lower Twins offers a great location to soak up the splendid scenery.
