Dedicated in 2000, Minnesota's Route 61 ranks in the top tier of most beautiful drives in the United States. Hugging the shoreline of Lake Superior, the All-American Road covers more than 150 miles from Duluth to the Canadian border. Along the route, charming gift shops, historic homes, quaint restaurants, five state park waysides, eight state parks and miles of splendid scenery create the magic of the North Shore Scenic Highway, not to mention all the marvelous scenes on the shoreline of America's largest freshwater lake.
The dramatic views of northern forests, shoreline cliffs, historic lighthouses, cascading rivers and waterfalls are also shared with the Superior National Forest Byway, Gunflint Trail and the Skyline Parkway. Spaced in among the dense evergreen forest, native hardwoods of aspen and birch put on a colorful show, making the area a popular destination in the fall season. A little patience, some trip pre-planning and lodging reservations will create a Great Lakes vacation to remember.
This roadside view shows the Beaver River as it cascades in a series of waterfalls toward Lake Superior. Nearly a dozen rivers sweep down from the Superior National Forest along the scenic drive, adding more beauty throughout this memorable route following the Big Lake.
