One of Minnesota's superb state parks, found along the North Shore, has grown considerably by combining Baptism River State Park and the Tettegouche hunting camp. The 9300 acre park was renamed for the Tettegouche area and includes lands along shores of Lake Superior and further inland, following the Baptism River Valley. Scoured by flowing water and ancient glaciers, dramatic bedrock cliffs, inland lakes, cascading rivers, waterfalls and a thick northern hardwood forest punctuate this North Shore park.
The spectacular High Falls can be accessed from two trails. The shortest, a mile long trail, weaves through a dense hardwood and conifer forest. As the trail approaches the Baptism River, a suspension bridge crosses above the falls. Hikers may continue down below the falls for great viewpoints of this thundering 60 foot waterfall. Tettegouche is one of those parks that hold an abundance of wonderful scenic landscapes, either at lakeside or along the river.
From Duluth to Grand Portage, the 150 mile North Shore is one of Minnesota's most popular drives. A dozen state parks and many outstanding attractions create one of the most spectacular North Country scenic byways. All this natural beauty has placed Route 61 on the map with a prestigious designation as an All-American Road.
