Whiteface Mountain - Lake Placid Area, Wilmington, New York

U.S. Olympic Training Site Olympic Logo    Whiteface Mountain, one of the High Peaks of the Adirondacks, is best known for an exciting 1980 Winter Olympics. The official U.S. Olympic Training Site, the nation's best athletes test their skills on the highest vertical drop east of the Rocky Mountains. Alpine ski events here on Whiteface include the downhill, slalom skiing and the giant slalom.
   Open to the public from late November to mid April, Whiteface offers 53 acres of skiing terrain, including 86 different trails. Voted the number one ski resort in the east, 120-meter Lake Placid Ski Jump - U.S. Olympic Training Site Whiteface Mountain suits skiers of all levels, with the Kids Kampus keeping the beginner in mind.
   Completed in 1989, the U.S. Olympic Training Center nearby Lake Placid provides assistance in a number of sport organizations. Not only does the facility assists in the training of bobsled, biathlon, figure skating, the luge and ice skating, athletes also train here in traditional summer sports. Teams train for synchronized swimming, taekwondo, judo, boxing, water polo and wrestling. Many of the training center's facilities were built for Olympics events. In fact, right next to the Lake Placid Olympic Museum is the site of the Miracle on Ice. This match created quite a stir when a college level U.S. hockey team defeated world-class Soviet Union team.
