Following a scenic section of East Branch of the Ausable River and a winding river valley, New York's Route 73 bears the fitting designation as the High Peaks Scenic Byway.
Located on the south side of the Great Range, the High Peaks Region is made up of 40 plus mountain peaks that rise over 4000 feet. This 30 mile byway funnels more than four million yearly travelers on their way to some of the most famous stops in the Adirondacks. This publically protected land, the largest in the lower 48 states, preserves 85 percent of wilderness land in eastern United States. Large tracts of verdant Adirondack forest, majestic mountains, and spectacular valleys attract outdoor enthusiasts throughout the year. This four season recreation area provides thousands of acres for backcountry hiking, biking, fishing, rock climbing and cross-country skiing.
Byway highlights include the Winter Olympics Museum, Whiteface Mountain, the Whiteface Veterans Memorial Highway, the John Brown Farm SHS, Cascade Lake, and the Wilmington Flume. Hosting the 1932 and 1980 Winter Olympics, Lake Placid has become the center of the winter sports world. Some of the byway's smaller wonders include Chapel Pond, a family adventure at Roaring Brook Falls, and dozens of friendly hamlets and villages. Although driving time is only 45 minutes, there are enough side trips and sightseeing opportunities to turn this byway adventure into a memorable two day excursion.
