Scenic USA - North Carolina Chimney Rock |
Photos by Ginny West |
Appearing to have popped out from a forest canopy in the Blue Ridge Mountains, Chimney Rock is really a huge remnant of ancient granite. The area around the mountain of stone was developed into an attraction more than a century ago, but has just recently been added to North Carolina's inventory of state parks.
In 1902, Dr. Lucius Morse purchased the Rutherford County property and developed a park for all to enjoy. The 64 acre parcel remained in the Morse family until
placed for sale in 2006. With the help of several partners, the state of North Carolina purchased the park property, surrounding acreage known as World’s Edge, and further developed the area in Hickory Nut Gorge.
Chimney Rock is set up with hiking trails in and around the park and its main features. For those without the enthusiasm for hiking up to the top of Chimney Rock, a 198 foot elevator shaft has been carved inside of the massive block, making for an easy ride to the top and panoramic views of the gorge and
Lake Lure below.
