A two lane blacktop road, called The Kanc by local residents, hits peak traffic during early October each year. Leaf peepers flood Sabbaday Falls Trail Sign - White Mountains National Forest, New Hampshire the White Mountains and especially Route 112, a highway christened the Kancamagus Scenic Byway. The Kancamagus (Kanc-ah-MAH-gus) Highway weaves its way from Conway, New Hampshire, over the 2855 foot Kancamagus Pass and down to Lincoln. As the highway winds through the White Mountains, byway travelers appreciate a view that's uncluttered by commercial establishments.
Aside from Lower Sabbaday Falls - White Mountains National Forest, New Hampshire sightseeing - hiking, camping, fishing and kayaking are some of activities visitors enjoy along The Kanc. Sabbaday Falls is one of the most popular waterfalls hikes on the byway. The lower falls, a picturesque stream that cascades through a narrow flume, is reached by an easy pathway and stairs which lead to the base of the falls. Turning at nearly a right angle, the trail climbs to grand viewpoints of the upper segment and climbs further to the top of the upper falls.
Wondering about the name? Many years ago, workers in the area wrapped up their job site for the winter on a Saturday. On Sunday morning, workers made one last visit to the falls area and left it with the name Sabbath Day Falls.
