Within a short drive from either Interstate 77 or I-64, Babcock State Park guests will no doubt enjoy the wide variety of recreational opportunities offered there. The main draw is the iconic Glade Creek Grist Mill. Ranking among the most picturesque mill settings in the country, this replica of the original Cooper's Grist Mill captures the heart of every photographer.
   Located in the New River Gorge country of Fayette County, this 4000 acre park is remarkable most any time of year, but is most spectacular in the fall. By the 3rd week of October when southern West Virginia's foliage reaches its peak of brilliance this park puts on an intense show. While late spring’s wildflowers and rhododendron treat visitors to a range of colorful displays, autumn's intense mountainsides, drenched in full color, compose a most memorable sight.
   Whereas the mill and Glade Creek attract the most attention, those that have a chance to spend more time in the park may enjoy swimming, fishing, boating, horseback riding and 20 miles of hiking trails. Naturalist's programs include nature tours where guests may learn more about West Virginia's trees, plants and wildlife. While a fast flowing Glade Creek entices those that have a passion for fishing, arch hunters will be able to easily locate the park's natural arch (inset). Sightseers will appreciate this exceptional mountain view from one of the park's scenic overlooks. Hopefully this scene will encourage more to enjoy West Virginia's state parks and the state's 12 million acres of forestland, the third largest in the nation.
