The Wiswell Road Covered Bridge is one of 17 covered bridges in Ashtabula County and among more than 150 still standing throughout the Buckeye State. Over 150 years old, the 120 foot single span bridge was built using a Town lattice design, and set on cut stone abutments across Phelps Creek. Noticeable in a close-up view, one of the center supports is made of sandstone from a nearby quarry, while the other is made from local creek stone.
The bridge, which was bypassed in the 1960s, was closed to traffic when Wiswell Road was rerouted to the west of Phelps Creek. After an extensive two-year renovation, it reopened to traffic in 2004 and is one of 17 drivable bridges in the county.
Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the bridge is also known as Windsor Mills Bridge and Warner Hollow Road Bridge. Here in Windsor Township the bridge spans Phelps Creek, a tributary of the Grand River. The 98-mile Grand River, designated Ohio's second Wild and Scenic River, begins in southeastern Geauga County. After passing through Trumbull and Ashtabula counties, the wandering river circles back to Lake County where it flows into Lake Erie near the Village of Fairport Harbor.
Each fall, the Ashtabula Covered Bridge Festival brings thousands of visitors to the county for self-tours of the covered bridges. The Wiswell Road Covered Bridge, still looking like new, is without a doubt one of the more popular stops on this tour.
