The Alaska Railroad steadily powers its way through some of the state's most beautiful landscapes. From Seward to Fairbanks, passengers are treated to head swiveling panoramas all along the 500 mile route. Special double-decker glass-domed observation cars offer views that make it difficult for passengers to stay in their seats. Train conductors, turned tour guides, point out numerous scenic features and wildlife sightings along the way.
   This scenic reflection, seen along the rail route, offers a look at the Talkeetna Mountain Range. The mountains, mirrored in a calm Susitna River, run parallel to the north-to-south railway and Highway 3. This scene was found just south of Alaska's most famous wildlife refuge, Denali National Park. Along with a name change of Mount McKinley, the park is also being pressured to allow more access roads and snowmobile traffic. The Wilderness Society seeks ways to educate the public on this sneak attack on our public refuge and preserve lands.
   The tiny town of Talkeetna, lying in the shadows of North America's tallest mountain, retains much of its pure Alaskan charm. Dirt roads, clapboard stores, log cabins and the Nagley Store create a lasting impression of rural Alaska. Serving miners and trappers since the early 1900s, Nagley's remains at the center of activity in the town. Talkeetna, seen as the stepping off place for outdoor adventure, directs visitors toward fishing trips, jet boat tours and horseback excursions. And with Mount Denali looming in the distance, Denali National Park is usually first on everyone's list.
