Located near the northwest corner of the state, Mount Greylock is the high point of Massachusetts, rising nearly 3500 feet. Along with a web of hiking trails, including the Appalachian Trail, a seasonal road allows visitors to explore the Mount Greylock area. Opened to the public in 1933, one of the summit highlights is the Veterans War Memorial Tower.
Built as a permanent memorial to World War I veterans, the 93 foot tower was originally designed to shine to perpetually for the men and women lost in war. Now, the light is ocasionally extinguished for star parties and during bird migratory seasons.
Built of granite blocks by the Civilian Conservation Corps, the stone tower endured harsh weather extremes and many frost and thaw cycles. During its last 80 years the memorial has undergone several improvement projects and total restoration periods. Well known for the marvelous 360 degree views from its observation portals, the tower is open from dawn to dusk. Visitors may climb the 89 spiral staircase steps of the Massachusetts Veterans War Memorial Tower. Dedicated in 1933, the memorial honors those who died in service to the country. The beacon, when lit, is visible for up to 70 miles away.
On a clear day views from up top are still spectacular. Nearby the famous Berkshire Hills, this section of the state has always been praised for its mountain beauty. Located in the only taiga-boreal forest in the state, this area was the first section of public land preserved in Massachusetts. Officially called the Mount Greylock State Reservation, the preserve dates back to 1898.
