One of the most prominent landmarks of the Union Pacific Railroad is the Cheyenne Depot. This city view shows the depot as it's seen from the street. Cheyene Depot Display - Cheyenne, Wyoming Built by the banks of Crow Creek, chief surveyor Grenville M. Dodge thought it best to be near a water souce in a somewhat dry High Plains. Work began on the structure in the spring of 1886. This grand 19th century depot exhibits an exquisite Richardsonian-Romanesque design, with details that showcase the superb craftsmanship. Built with red and buff colored sandstone, topped off with its eye-catching clock tower and its interior lined with red oak, the structure was opened with a grand ceremony in 1887. The 1100 pound Seth-Thomas clock was added in 1890 and instantly became the Cheyenne landmark, easily seen from 10 blocks away.
Featuring both the aspects of transportation and architecture, the train station Union Pacific Steam Locomotive 4004 Big - Cheyenne, Wyoming is now home for the Cheyenne Depot Museum. The Wyoming historic landmark is the last remaining grand railroad station on the first transcontinental rail route. The museum, founded in 1993, interprets Cheyenne's early railroading history and the construction of the Union Pacific Railroad.
After an extensive These Boots are made for Talking - Cheyenne, Wyoming restoration project, the remodeled first floor houses the museum, gift shop and a restaurant. The museum is open daily at various hours and closed on major holidays. In order to monetarily maintain the historic depot, a collaborative effort by the Cheyenne Depot Museum Foundation and the Downtown Development Authority created a project entitled “These Boots are made for Talking”. The eight-foot-tall cowboy boots were created by local artists to depict historical aspects of Cheyenne and Wyoming. The audio tour provides an opportunity to hear the history behind each boot as told by the artist. Tracking down all the boots calls for a scavenger hunt, as they're spread throughout downtown and beyond.
