Long before there were automobiles and the famous Route 66, wealthy Americans were able to travel to see the great wonders of the West by train. Once the Topeka and Sante Fe completed a rail-line to the Grand Canyon's South Rim, more and more visitors would experience the world's greatest natural wonder.
Here in Williams, site of the southern terminus of the Grand Canyon Railroad, sightseers are only 62 miles from the Grand Canyon. Hosting guests from all over the world, the Grand Canyon Hotel in Williams opened its doors in 1891. Proud to be the oldest hotel in Arizona, the two-story European-style hotel features 25 beautifully decorated rooms.
Bypassed by Interstate 40, the hotel sat empty for 35 years. With so much history surrounding the establishment, Amy and Oscar Fredrickson purchased the hotel in 2004. After a total renovation, the hotel reopened in June of 2005. Located in the heart of Williams, guests are sure to enjoy this historic Route 66 town, its wonderful shops and delightful restaurants. And nothing would make the stay more memorable than a trip aboard a steam-powered train to the Grand Canyon Village.
