Devastating city flooding of Cedar Rapids and Iowa City remained in the news throughout the month of June in 2008, while the Cedar River crested to its highest level in Iowa history. Some of worst disasters in America's Midwest were the result of flood waters with record loss of life and billions of dollars in property damage.
Even without flooding, warning signs of the dangerous currents are posted along the Cedar River. This view shows a seemingly smooth running Cedar River as it passes through Palisades-Kepler State Park. After witnessing the park's bold limestone cliffs, it's easy to guess how the Palisades name came about. The name Kepler was added when Louis H. Kepler's gifted 700 acres of additional land in 1928.
A popular recreation area for well over a century, today's family oriented park covers 840 acres and features six miles of trails. The park's ever present wildlife, scenery and excellent fishing are a few of the main drawing cards. Overnight visitors have a choice from modem camping facilities to cabin rentals. The 1930s lodge, built by the Civilian Conservation Corps, is a great place for a family reunion and wedding reception. The Linn County park is found just to the east of Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
