A sizable portion of Georgia's land stewardship was developed by Georgia Power. While a large amount is protected as national forests, national wildlife refugees and state parks, Georgia Power is credited for developing 60,000 acres of lakes, 1350 miles of shoreline and dozens of recreation parks. Providing 2.25 million customers with electric power throughout the state, Georgia Power is also the largest non-governmental provider of recreation facilities in the state.
   Covering three counties just south of Atlanta, Jackson Lake is one of the oldest reservoirs in Georgia. Built near the confluence of the Yellow, Alcovy and South rivers, Jackson Lake continues on as the Ocmulgee River beyond the dam.
   First envisioned as power generation facility for the city of Macon, the Lloyd Shoals Dam began construction in 1907. Even during a time of economic downturn, several hundred bankers invested in the multi-million dollar project.
   Today, Jackson Lake is a haven for summer recreation and lakeside living. Four lakeside parks and just as many marinas handle boating access. Picnicking, fishing, swimming and camping are offered at the medley of parks. During the summer months you'll seldom find any calm water, as water skiing, wakeboarding, tubing and jet skiing are common sights on the lake. After bass boats break the early morning calm, watersports continue until sundown.
