Gilbert Stuart, born of Scottish immigrants in Rhode Island, is considered a top portrait artist during the late 18th century. Born of a Scottish immigrants who operated the first snuff mill in America, Gilbert Stuart lived with his family in South County at first, then moved with them to Newport. Gilbert continued his studies in Europe and upon his return to America, he took on a career as a portrait artist in Philadelphia, New York, Washington and Boston.
Gilbert Stuart is considered the master portraitist during a time when the United States was in its infancy. Currently his portraits hang in museums all over the world, and his works include the first six founding fathers of the United States and five of their wives. His portrait of George Washington is seen every day by Americans as they pass along a one dollar bill.
The Gilbert Stuart Museum, located at his birthplace in Saunderstown, Rhode Island, honors his legacy. Appearing as a journey back in time, the museum offers a look at an 18th century working man's home, snuff mill, grist mill. Founded in 1930, the museum honors the life of Gilbert Stuart and has the distinction as a registered national landmark.
