Summers are hot across the south! While climatologists try to warn the world of global warming, most southern residents don't need a ream of scientific data to tell them it's getting hotter. Although local weather is on a different scale than long term climate change, some of the warmest summers are in the record books, with three Georgia cities registering 90 degree temps, or higher, for over a hundred consecutive days.
Kids know just what to do on a hot summer day. Here in Fannin County, the Toccoa River offers a string of refreshing pools to cool any summer heat-wave. And the Toccoa River Rapids on Aska Road is the perfect spot on a hot Blue Ridge afternoon! Although water released from the Lake Blue Ridge Dam seldom tops 60 degrees, sections of the river upstream (south) of the lake warm up enough to keep your teeth from chattering.
Although the Toccoa River is best known as a canoe trail and fly fishing paradise, leave it to kids to keep things simple. Either by taking bikes to the Toccoa River Rapids or convincing Mom to grab the tubes and have a picnic lunch on the river, their summers on the Toccoa are packed with memories that will last a lifetime.
