Centered in the Wyoming Valley, the city of Wilkes-Barre is the 13th largest city in Pennsylvania. Located along the Susquehanna River, the city is framed by the Pocono Mountains to the east and the Endless Mountains in the west. Named for two members of the British Parliament, Isaac Barre and John Wilkes, Wilkes-Barre is one of the few cities in America with a hyphenated name.
   One of the Wilkes-Barre's most prominent landmarks is the Market Street Bridge built during the late 1920s. Completed on the eve of the Great Depression, the bridge is a beautiful example of long-span bridge architecture. Stretching across the Susquehanna, the 1400 foot span was built of concrete and granite, and decorated with a pair of pylons on each approach. Each pylon is topped with an eagle sculpture, carved from limestone. Built with a total of 12 arches, six of the center arches are open spandrels, requiring concrete delivered over a 1500 foot cable way.
