Located about halfway between Middletown and Middlefield, Wadsworth State Park is part of the legacy created by Clarence Seymour Wadsworth. Said to be well ahead of his time, Wadsworth's desire to promote preservation and the smart growth of communities lead to a lifelong focus on environmental stewardship. By 1935, Wadsworth had established the Rockfall Corporation, preserved the acreage around Wadsworth Falls and established an arboretum on his Long Hill Estate. After his death in 1942, a portion of his estate was turned over to the state so the public could enjoy Wadsworth Falls.
Not far from the Connecticut River, the Coginchaug River was an important power source for area mills and factories. Most traces of the powder mill, textile mill and pistol factory are gone, and the Coginchaug is now a popular route for river paddlers. Although it requires a handful of portages, there's a potential for Class II whitewater. One of the main obstacles on the river is Wadsworth Falls, a 30 foot waterfall right beside Cherry Hill Road. Separated from the main Wadsworth Falls State Park, the falls can be reached either on foot or by car. Waterfall fans may also track down Little Falls in the main section of the park. Hikers may also encounter a brief geology lesson as Scout Trail follows along a stream bed composed of Portland Arkose. Six additional park trails, including the Main Trail (orange blaze) and Little Falls (blue blaze) Trail, are more great ways to explore this Connecticut parkland. And thanks to Clarence Wadsworth, this area can be enjoyed by all.
