When heading south towards Moab from I-70, Utah's Route 128 offers a great preview of what lies ahead in one of Utah's most popular vacation destinations. The Upper Colorado River Scenic Byway follows Historic Dewey Bridgethe river for 44 miles. This scenic byway marks the beginning of Canyonland Country and previews the impressive cut carved out by the famous Colorado River. Imposing vertical cliffs, made of Wingate sandstone, loom above the roadway. Castle Rock and Fishers Towers rise in the distance, beckoning vacationers to pause and explore. Byway visitors may also enjoy the scenery surrounding Negro Bill Canyon, Morning Glory Arch, and the stately La Sal Mountains in the distance. Unfortunately the area's historic Dewey Bridge was lost to fire. Built in 1916, the Grand County Historic Preservation Commission is raising funds to assess bridge reconstruction based on original plans.
Up ahead, the city of Moab is conveniently centered in the midst of Fisher Towers - Castle Valley, Utah three majestic park sites. Overlooks at the Dead Horse State Park tower 2000 feet above the Colorado River. Two National Parks take in one of the world's greatest concentration of natural arches and incredible canyons cut by the Green and Colorado rivers. More of these natural wonders may keep sightseers busy with a drive into the La Sal Mountains, as well as Castle Valley where towering spires are reminiscent of Europe's ancient cathedrals. Wilson Arch and the Potash Road petroglyphs are two roadside wonders that also deserve some exploration time. For the young at heart, extreme mountain biking, rock climbing, Colorado rafting and hundreds of miles of four wheel drive trails add to the excitement and fun in Utah's canyonlands.
