Not far from Interstate 85 and Exit 147 at Commerce, covered bridge fans will find the longest historic bridge in Georgia. Located in one of the most picturesque parks in the state, the Watson Mill Bridge stretches across the South Fork of the Broad River with a 229 foot span. Carrying park traffic, the 130 year old centerpiece of Watson Mill Bridge State Park rests in its original site.
The park, brighten with its sparkling cascades and waterfalls, offers plenty of ideas for recreational activities. For everyone's favorite pastime, group shelters and picnic areas are found along the riverside. Over 20 miles of hiking, biking and equestrian trails beckon everyone to come and explore the outdoors. Tent, RV and equestrian campsites invite park guests to spend the night. Three pioneer campsites and log cabin bunkhouses cater to larger groups. Canoe and pedal boat rentals make it easy for water lovers to enjoy the day on the river. And catches of catfish, bream and bass will tickle any young anglers.
At one time Georgia utilized over 200 covered bridges, but today less than 20 remain in the state. Here, near the town of Comer in Watson Mill Bridge State Park, a 1973 restoration of the Watson Mill Bridge preserves the work of master bridge builder Horace King. King's interesting bio tells that his handiwork was known and admired all over the state. The intrigue continues, as this pre Civil War bridge builder was also a rare, freed slave. Washington King, son of Horace King, continued in his father's footsteps, learning the trade, and creating more bridges using their popular Ithiel Town lattice design.
