Celebrating its city bicentennial in 2005, the 200 year old Canton remains one of the top 10 cities in Ohio and touts itself for big-city living in a mid-sized town. Despite a slight downturn in population, the Midwest city remains prosperous, owing much to its railroads, manufacturing, financial and healthcare industries. Home to the William McKinley Presidential Library and National First Ladies Library, Canton is also the birthplace of American professional football.
Supporting the outstanding Canton Symphony Orchestra (since 1937), Canton Ballet and Canton Museum of Art, visitors also enjoy a fully restored McKinley National Monument. For sport enthusiasts, Canton is also home to the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Known worldwide, the Hall of Fame is a fitting tribute to the town where American professional football was born. Over the past 50 years the hall has more than quadrupled in size and recently witnessed the largest major expansion called the Future 50 Expansion and Renovation Project.
The Canton Bulldogs were one of the professional football powerhouses in the early 1900s, featuring one of the all-time greats, Jim Thorpe. Celebrating decades of America's finest football figures, the Pro Football Hall of Fame continues to entertain fans. Over the past 50 years, the Hall has welcomed over ten million visitors from every state in America as well as 60 foreign countries.
