Virginia's Shenandoah Valley, stretching out for 200 miles along the I-81 corridor, has always been recognized for its rich farmlands and unsurpassed scenic beauty. Overlooking all these miles of lush valley farmland is the ever scenic Skyline Drive that skips along the mountaintop ridges. Set between the Allegheny and Blue Ridge mountains, friendly folks in this valley have entertained visitors since the late 1800s.
One of the valley's unique landmarks and ancient wonders is located near Mount Solon, between Staunton and Harrisburg. Appearing as towers of a medieval castle, these natural chimneys rise up 120 feet from a valley meadow. The odd rock towers are remnant sediments from an ancient sea. Surviving eons of weathering, the chimneys will continue to face a slow, constant process of erosion. Etched through the base of two of the spires are small arch-like tunnels, adding more elements of wonder to these dramatic formations.
The 120 acre Natural Chimneys Park offers seasonal camping sites, nature trails and biking paths. A steep pathway climbs up to the bluff line alongside the chimney tops. Here within a few feet of these natural towers, hikers are rewarded with panoramic views of the local Shenandoah Valley and a distant view of the Blue Ridge Mountains.
